Match reports from our Captains - 2nd March 2024

Mens 1s vs Bowden M5s
The game started with both teams being cautious and not wanting to give an early goal away.
Horwich had the first opportunity when Reidy found himself with a bit of space at the top of the D and forced a good save from the Bowdon Keeper.
5 minutes later, Bowdon went down the other end and went into a 1 -0 lead. This was shortly followed by a 2nd goal when Bowdon won the ball back in midfield, and the forward made a smart finish when Kyle went to ground. Kyle made a fantastic stick save from a penalty corner to keep the score at 2-0 and keep Horwich in the game. It wasn't all Bowdon, Horwich had a few good opportunities and some excellent build-up play, but just couldn't find the goal.
Horwich performed much better in the second half.
Warren was a wall in front of the defence, breaking up attacks and starting attacks for Horwich. Daky, Nic and Dan defended superbly, and Kyle had very little to do. Horwich's midfield were looking to be positive going forwards. Horwich finally got a well deserved goal back through Geordie.
Reidy had a chance to equalise but was thwarted by a brilliant save again from the Bowdon keeper.
The lads definitely deserved a draw, but unfortunately, it wasn't to be.
Final score Bowden 2 - 1 Horwich.

Ladies BL vs Bury Ladies
The 1st round of the Reynolds/Cowell Points Cup saw Horwich Ladies 2s take on Bury.
It was always going to be a struggle by virtue of Horwich’s 35 point starting deficit.
Both teams started strongly and there were good chances but Bury got the early breakthrough and bagged themselves a goal and 4 points. Horwich managed to get some points on the board by securing a couple of short corners but Bury added to their lead and at half time, the score was 2-0 and 54-17.
Horwich pulled a goal back early in the 2nd half with some good team work that led to Julie crossing the perfect ball for Deb to knock in. Despite some really good team hockey and stand out performances from Paige and Lauren, Horwich were unable to add any further goals but a couple of good breaks allowed Bury to add another 2 goals to their tally. A flurry of cards was the only drama in an otherwise well spirited game of hockey.

Mens 2s vs Leigh M1s
Horwich 2s played Leigh in the second match up of the season. Leigh took an early goal and heads dropped for Horwich. The 2s lacked the discipline we have seen in previous matches. Leigh took another goal just before half time. The second half was better with better passing and Horwich managed to take back a goal. The 2s had more opportunities in the 2nd half but no more we converted.
The game ended with 2-1 to Leigh
