Match reports from our Captains - 9th March 2024

Mens 1s vs Didsbury Northern Mens 4s
Throughout the game, Didsbury showed why they were top of the league, patience, lots of movement, and they were clinical in all honesty.
Didsbury took the lead after 5 minutes with a well crafted goal and a volley leaving Kyle with no chance.
5 minutes later, Geordie equalised with a remarkable finish, the ball looping up off the defenders stick, and Geordie somehow smashed the ball down over the on rushing keeper. It was more of a badminton shot than a hockey goal. That brought up his 250th goal for the club. What a way to do it.
Didsbury controlled the last 10 minutes of the first half and went into half-time 3-1 up.

In the second half, Horwich went after Didsburynand frustrated them. Didsbury scored again before Reidy pulled one back to make it 4-2.
Didsbury weren't finished and managed to add one more goal. Despite the scoreline, Horwich always posed a threat and were never completely out of the game.
A big mention to Kyle, who made some fantastic saves, including a stick save in the top corner.
5-2 Loss. Onwards and upwards.

Ladies 1s vs Urmston Ladies 2s
The game started slow, Horwich dominated the possession from the outset but couldn’t quite get the ball in the back of the goal.

After 30 minutes, Horwich’s first goal came from team captain Abby. As Horwich settled into the game and created multiple attacking opportunities, they then managed to score 2 more goals in the second half. The score 3-0 to Horwich at half time with goals from Julie and Sammi.

It took just 4 minutes for Horwich to kick off their scoring streak with a goal for Paige. With some beautiful transitions around the back to switch the play and efficient passing between the midfield and forwards, Horwich were able to score 8 more goal in the remainder of the second half, with the game finishing 12-0 for Horwich.
Goals came from Julie, Sammi and Zoe.

This was a phenomenal performance from the ladies 1s, with every player giving a stand out performance.
This win not only is the highest score line Horwich ladies 1s have created this season, it also marked over 100 league goals for the team and secured the top spot with Horwich now sitting 11 points clear at the top.

Ladies BL vs Eagley 2s
The final league game of the season brought about the fastest goal of the season for Horwich Ladies 2s. The game started with an Eagley push back that was mis-controlled by their defence and allowed Deb to nip in and knock the ball past the keeper! This sparked Eagley in to action and they had a number of good breaks but they weren’t able to put their chances away.

A great ball up the line from Kerry, some good control and a cross from Annie allowed Jen to slot a 2nd goal past the Eagley keeper, meaning that Horwich went in to half time 2-0 up.
There were plenty of chances for both teams in the second half with Nic making some good saves in the Horwich goal on her debut! Neither team was able to add any further goals.

The game ended 2-0, cementing Horwich’s place as runners up in the league in their first season.

Mens 2s vs Stockport Bramhall Mens 3s
Where was this Horwich 2s team last week? Horwich 2s took 10 men to Stockport Bramhall. Horwich settled into the match incredibly quickly. Quick passing and playing the overlaps had Bramhall worried. Horwich had a few chances in the first half but a couple of good opportunities were missed. The second half was much of the same high-quality hockey!!

Eventually, a great ball from petros to Mo at the P-spot finally resulted in a goal! An unfortunate short corner to Bramhall was converted into a goal to level the game. Horwich had tired legs but kept pushing for a second goal to no avail.
Final score 1-1.
